Michael Hinson, advocate for LGBTQ and marginalized communities in Philadelphia, dies at 55

Michael S. Hinson Jr., a respected LGBTQ advocate in Philadelphia, has reportedly died at the age of 55. Hinson, who was founder and former executive director of the Colours Organization and co-founder of Philadelphia Black Gay Pride, died on Saturday at Penn Rittenhouse Hospice, reported Philadelphia Tribune. Hinson was the first liaison appointed by Mayor John F. Street for Philadelphia's LGBT Affairs in 2020. Two teens arrested for allegedly attacking LGBT teen in Florida

Two teens seen on video brutally attacking an LGBTQ teen at a park in Florida have been arrested, authorities announced today. Chad Sanford, 14, reportedly was attacked after he was invited to hang out with a group of people around his age who the teen thought were friends. "They came behind me and jumped me," Chad told WPLG Local 10. He said his alleged attackers said, "Don’t come around me with that gay (expletive)." Chad was also attacked by older kids at a middle school last year in an incident that made national headlines, reported WPLG Local 10. The Attorney General in Oregon shared a report today that indicates racially-biased incidents and crimes increased to record levels last year. The AG discussed the findings today, pointing to statistics that match a similar rise in racial, religious and gender “bias” incidents and crimes in other states. The report says the Oregon DOJ Bias Response Hotline received 1,683 reports last year, a 53% increase from the previous year prior. About 59% of the reports were called bias incidents, and 28% were categorized as bias crimes. Blacks and African-Americans were the most targeted group based on the statistics. UK strikes migration deal with Nigeria; Deportees, including LGBT, arrive in Lagos

At least 30 African migrants arrived in Lagos, Nigeria on Thursday after the United Kingdom came to an agreement with Nigerian officials to take people who were being deported from the region. It was unclear why the African migrants were removed from the United Kingdom but officials reportedly said they broke laws in the U.K. Among the deportees, 22 were Nigerians. The remaining were Ghanaians who would be transported back to their home country. The United Kingdom has come to similar migration agreements with other African nations, including Ghana and Rwanda. Hate crime reports in California surge to highest level in 20 years

Hate crimes in California have jumped to their highest levels in more than 20 years, according to the state’s Attorney General. On Tuesday, officials said reports of hate crimes last year have increased 33%. The increase was attributed to racism and homophobia. This follows an increase over the previous year in similar reports of hate crimes, particularly against Blacks, Asians and the LGBT community. The Attorney General said hate crimes in 2021 targeting Black people represented the sharpest increase with 513 reported incidents, up 13% from the previous year. Police ask for help finding killer of Black transgender woman in Milwaukee

Authorities in Milwaukee, Minnesota are asking for the public’s help locating the person or people responsible for killing a young Black transgender woman. The woman was killed after someone shot at her on a street earlier this month and police are asking for leads. The victim’s mother reportedly believes she was targeted because her daughter was transgender. Authorities said they cannot comment on if the woman was killed because she was transgender due to limited information.
