Report: Two journalists ambushed, killed by rival gangs in Haiti

Two Haitian journalists were shot to death and set on fire while on a reporting assignment in a Port-au-Prince slum overrun by gangs. Tayson Latigue and Frantzsen Charles were killed by rival gangs after the two, along with group of journalists, among were attacked on Sunday in the Cité Soleil district, reported the Guardian. Dieudonné St-Cyr, a reporter with the Haiti’s Association of Independent Journalists, reportedly told radio station Métropole Haiti that the journalists were ambushed by two rival gangs, and that the remaining journalists fled unharmed. Mexican official says string of Haitian murders not hate crimes; Community leaders say racism a systemic issue

An immigration official for Mexico reportedly said the recent violent deaths of Haitian migrants were not hate crimes but random criminal acts happening throughout the country. The statements come on the heels of questions and concerns in the Haitian community, many of whom have been in Tijuana and other parts of Mexico hoping for asylum in the U.S. The official reportedly said in part that Haitian immigrants have been welcome to Mexico because they are “hardworking.” Haitian community leaders in Mexico have said racism is a systemic issue in the country. Haitians have taken jobs when possible as they wait for possible entry into the United States.
