A stampede at a church charity event in Nigeria has left 31 people dead, mostly children.

The stampede happened at an annual event on Saturday at a church in Port Harcourt in the state of Rivers. The event, which gives away gifts and food, reportedly attracted more people than anticipated, many of whom started lining up to reserve a spot at 5 a.m. even though the start time was scheduled  to begin at 9 a.m.

A gate that was supposed to be locked was somehow broken and people flooded into the area.

Most the victims of the stampede were children. A pregnant woman was also reportedly killed in the stampede. About seven people were also injured.

Some church members were also reportedly attacked by relatives of the victims of the stampede.
