Nearly 900 inmates reportedly escaped from a prison in Nigeria after the facility was attacked from outside by Islamic extremists, and hundreds still remain missing.

The massive jailbreak happened in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital late Tuesday night. About half of the escapees were either caught or turned themselves in but the remaining escapees remained missing.

Officials have vowed to find all of the remaining escapees and return them to custody.

One guard was killed and at least three more were injured in the attack on Tuesday. Rebels reportedly used explosives and firearms in the attack on the maximum security prison.

President Muhammadu Buhari visited the prison facility on Wednesday. He tweeted later that day that he was “disappointed” with Nigeria’s intelligence system.

Extremist rebels have been responsible for jailbreaks within the last decade but Tuesday night’s attack was the first assault of it’s kind in Abuja in many years.
